A Packaged Sewage Treatment Plant (PSTP) is a compact and self-contained system designed to treat sewage and wastewater from residential, commercial, or industrial sources. It provides an on-site solution for treating and purifying wastewater before it is discharged or reused. PSTPs typically employ biological treatment processes to remove organic matter, suspended solids, and nutrients from the wastewater. The most common processes used are activated sludge, extended aeration, sequential batch reactor (SBR), or moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR). The incoming sewage usually undergoes preliminary treatment, including screening or grit removal, to remove large solids, debris, and grit that may damage or hinder the treatment process. Aeration is a vital part of the biological treatment process. It provides oxygen to the microorganisms that break down the organic matter in the wastewater. Aeration can be achieved using diffusers, aerators, or mechanical systems. After the aeration process, the treated wastewater enters settling tanks or clarifiers, where the solid particles settle to the bottom as sludge. The clarified water at the top is then separated and further treated. Depending on the requirements and regulations of the specific application, the treated wastewater may undergo disinfection to kill or remove harmful bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. Common disinfection methods include chlorination, ultraviolet (UV) disinfection, or ozonation.
